Top Ten Most Popular Manga in Japan
Category: Animation & ComicsList: Top 10 Most Popular Manga in Japan
Date: April 2006
Source: Japan Media Arts Plaza
Base: Total votes numbered just under 79,000. Each person was allowed to vote for up to 10 manga titles. Sorry, no details on actual scores by title.
Notes: The full top 100 list is available at the link above - but you will need to be able to read Japanese! The term manga is the common word used in Japan for 'comics' and can be used for all kinds of comic, no matter the origin or content. Gaming fans will note that most of these titles have been converted into bestselling video games for consoles and computers as well as animated series or movies.
The number one most popular manga in this survey was 'Slam Dunk', a story about Sakuragi Hanamichi, a bad-boy, high school punk who is always getting into scraps and trouble with teachers until one day he meets Haruko Akagi, the girl he falls in love with. In order to win her heart he stops fighting and joins the basketball team (despite having absolutely no idea what the game entails) and transfers his fighting ability into success on the court.
